Cap Henry Garners First 305 Feature Victory

Saturday April 14 did not start the way Cap Henry and Team CHR had hoped as a fuel problem caused some drama after the practice session forcing Henry and crew to work quick. After all was said and done, Team CHR along with its 17-year-old driver managed to score their first 305 victory of his career.

After a good pill draw meaning a good heat race start things turned up side down after the first hot lap practice session. The car looked strong on the track, though little did anyone know of what was going on under the hood of the HMS backed sprinter. When the car pulled into the pits it appeared the evening might be done as oil was coating everything under the hood and smoke was rolling off the headers.

Diagnosis took a few minutes and with the help of the engine builders from Level Performance a solution was drawn. It appeared the fuel on and off valve was either left on or gone bad and dumped raw alcohol into the oil system causing the overflow issue. Quick work by the team led by Crew Chief K. Whaley would have the car ready for its heat race.

The D&D collision machine would start the heat race inside row three with the top four finishers transferring to the A-main event. Cap made quick work of getting into a transfer spot, though he had to work a little harder to get to his eventual second place finishing position behind heat race winner Cody Runion. The top four from each heat race redraw for the top 12 starting positions in the A main event and the number one pill would go to Cap Henry for the first time in his sprint car career.

The young driver was used to starting deep in the fields the majority of the time since he began racing sprint cars. Starting on the pole would bring new challenges as now Cap had to pace the field to the green flag. From the drop of the flag to the checkers, the Kear’s Speed Shop Sprinter led all 25 laps to score his first career 305 feature victory. Two cautions caused some concern as the field would bunch back up giving several drivers a shot at the young and talented pilot.

“I was a little nervous starting from the pole,” stated Ohio pilot Cap Henry. “I have never started from the front row but felt I did a pretty good job. Experience helped me after the caution restarts and making quick work of back markers was key to locking up the win. I can’t wait until the next event.”

“Team Prepares For Challenging Year”

attica08 Bellevue, Ohio –
April 7, 2008 - In what started out to be just a shakedown run to shake the rust off from a long winter, turned into an eye opening experience for all involved with young Cap Henry as his experience helped him transfer through the B-Main to claim a solid 15th place finish.

The weekend goal for the team was to shake down the team's recently completed 360 sprint car. The car was still wearing some of its 2007 colors as the D&D Collision sponsored team, had been to busy with the primary 305 car to get the paint work and graphics completed on the second car. The G-force sponsored ride began the evening in what was a very short practice session as a fellow competitor spun bringing out both the caution and the checkers at the same time after only four laps. The only thing that was learned was that the Level Performance power plant had a lot of power and Cap was not afraid to try and use it.

Cap has only ever qualified a handful of times and managed to qualify the Kear's Speed Shop sprinter 36th out of the 41 cars. The top 38 cars were within one second of each other. The qualifying time meant he would be starting tenth in the fourth heat with the likes of All-Star regulars and local stand outs Rob Chaney, Brain Paulus, Mike Linder, Lee Jacobs, Dean Jacobs, and Chris Andrews among others. The Ramshackle Supply backed sprinter managed a ninth place finish in his heat though he was able to stay in contention with the topdrivers as he got used to the much more powerful cars.

The heat race finish would relegate Henry to the 15th starting position out of 20 for the B-Main with only four cars to transfer on to the A-main. Cap showed fierce determination during this session to never give up and to never underestimate his talents and desires. Cap would begin his charge to the front immediately on the start with his Bell Racing backed car. Passing two cars as the green flew coming off of turn four would start his march through the running order.

Cap would make this pass repeatedly on the restarts as well as pulling repeated slide jobs going into turn one with a car that is supposedly under powered against its 410 counter parts as well as running on a motor that was originally built over 12 years ago. With a handful of laps to go the Junior high school student would make an attempt to get eventual b-main winner Mike Linder going into turns one and two. He hauled it in next to the #312 car and then hit a rut that forced him to back out of the throttle letting the Linder car get away. From the 15th starting position to finish third was an accomplishment that opened the eyes of many in the pits as well as in the grand stands. It had been a long time since a rookie made it into and all star main event let alone one running a 360 motor.

The young driver kept his composure and did not seem to let his nerves get the better of him as he started the A-main from the last position. Cap proceeded to bring out the first caution of the A-main as he wisely spun his car to miss the melee that was occurring in turns one and two on the opening laps. On the restart he again began to march his way forward picking off cars exiting turn four. He managed to work his way up to the 15th position passing more cars then everyone else except for two veterans running in the field.

“I am very happy with the results,” stated Cap Henry. “Overall the team was ecstatic with the first outing of the year and we look forward to the next race in the T-N-T 305 sprinter on April,11th.
