A.J. Havens and Keith Whaley Promoted by Team CHR and Driver Cap Henry!

Hot off the Florida leg of their 2010 All Star Circuit of Champions season, Team CHR announced two key upgrades with a promotion and personnel addition.

Chad Kemenah’s former World of Outlaws and All-Stars crew chief, A.J. Havens, has been added to call the shots for Cap Henry’s run for the All Stars Championship as well as his bid for the Rookie Of The Year title. Additionally, Havens will work with Mark and Keith Whaley to help oversee Brian Smith’s Gressman Powersports backed #02 car running for the F.A.S.T. Championship.

Keith Whaley, who has been with the team just over 5 years, has helped propel driver Cap Henry to five (5) “Rookie-Of-The-Year” titles in the last two seasons. Whaley has been promoted to Shop Foreman and will add numerous crew duties at the track as well driving the rig that will transport the #04 winged sprint car.

The team also welcomes the addition of its newest crew member, Karlee Jean Havens, born 2/18/2010 and weighing in at 6 lbs, 14 oz. Congratulations to Sheyanne and A.J.!

Cap Henry startyed 10th last night in the Allstar race at East Bay and finished 2nd, and awesome run for the young man. He was 12th quick in qualifying out of 32 cars.

Nights 3 & 4
February 5th, 2010

3&4Night 3 is in the books and Team CHR is in the trailer with a car in one piece and some strong experience for Cap and the team. Though the night was not what everyone had hoped for, Cap showed he is getting very close to holding his own with the top level in the sprint car world. An early pill draw may have hurt the team as the track seemed to get faster and faster as qualifying went on. Cap turned in a time of 13.6, just a tick off the majority of the World Of Outlaw and All Star drivers that were primarily in the 13.5’s with a few quicker yet. Team CHR qualified 29th out of the 41 drivers making attempts, putting them deep in heat 1. Starting 8th Cap would need to finish 5th to make the A-main.

The start indicated he may be able to do this as he thundered down the outside picking up 2 positions on the front straight only to find he was not going to be given room to move down going into turn one, and he had to lift dropping him back into his starting position.

Again he made a run on the cars in front of him only to find he had to back off a second time for slower cars and drifting high losing his momentum a second time. At this point the front 5 had pulled far enough a way that only a yellow would give the 19 year old a chance to get a shot at a transfer position, and it unfortunately didn’t come, He would finish 7th in the heat race.

The B-main would not prove to be any better for the Rookie of the Year contender as he was starting deep in the field in 12th position with the likes of 1) 17-Daryn Pittman 2) 6-Danny Lasoski 3) 30C-Lance Dewease 4) 49-Brad Sweet 5) 22-Greg Hodnett 6) 1J-Bronson Maeshen 7) 7M-Mark Smith 8) W20-Greg Wilson 9) 13-Paul McMahan 10) 22E-Brian Ellenberger all finishing in front of him.

Night 4 would find a track the exact opposite of night 3 with the track now being dry slick, and having a very high cushion. Not as fast as night three on the clocks, though probably much harder to drive as the cars were loose and rear grip would prove to be an eventual issue, with 5 to 6 cars destroying right rear tires in the A-main event. Cap would draw the number 13 pill for qualifying, though a bobble on his part going into turn 1 on his only qualifying lap would pretty much end the evening for Team CHR, as the 38 qualifying time out of 41 would put the team at the back of the pack all night.

Cap’s second night at Volusia would become a character builder and learning experience for the young driver as he would find the ½ mile a tough track to tame in only his second appearance with his heat race finishing as follows: 1) 9-Joey Saldana 2) 3C-Cale Conley 3) R19-Jac Haudenschild 4) 15H-Sam Hafertepe Jr. 5) 49-Brad Sweet 6) 30C-Lance Dewease 7) 11K-Kraig Kinser 8) 51-Fred Rahmer 9) 89G-David Gravel 10) O4-Cap Henry III . The B-main would be no less challenging as the B-main could have been an All-Star or World of Outlaws A-main on any given night. What Team CHR did see with a change in set up was a determined driver that started very fast, and was chop blocked, dropped back and then lunged back forward passing 3or 4 cars before he looped it out in turn 1 being collected by the car that had blocked him earlier. Overall the team was satisfied as they were able to learn a lot from the event from driver down through the crew.

The team does leave Volusia Speedway stretching the long Rookie of the Year points battle out to approximately 47 points unofficially as we head to 3 nights at East Bay.

Night 1 & 2
February 4, 2010

Feb4Cap Henry put in a solid performance with the All-Star Circuit of
Champions on Night #1 at Ocala Speedway last Friday.  The 19 year old Bellevue, Ohio native will take on the best in the sprint car business during his Rookie season with the All-Stars and proved he was up to the task.

Cap qualified 23rd out of the 30 drivers in attendance with many from
the World Of Outlaws circuit.  The qualifying time would help Cap make the A-main directly from his heat as he had the pole position of heat race #3 with the top 5 automatically transferring to the main event. Thanks to some ruts between turns 1 & 2, Cap settled for the third spot transfer into the "A" main.

Florida Crew Chief A.J. Havens gave Cap the best advice by telling him
to take it easy in turn one with an expected "first race, first turn
accident".and there was.  Starting 22nd, he steared clear as veterans
Dean Jacobs, Lance Dewease, and Bill Rose watched from the sidelines since they did not make the final.

As the race finally began, Cap was able to settle in to a strong pace
and hold his own, coming home 19th.  With fellow rookie Jarrod Ridge not making the show, he leaves Ocala with an initial lead in the "Rookie of the Year" Honors although there is a very long season ahead.

The second night at Ocala was rained out and the team moves to Volusia Speedway for nights 3 & 4.  The rain is finally clearing allowing for racing tonight and Thursday so stay tuned!
