Cap Henry Sprint Car Review
“Up’s and down’s for youngster”

Cap Henry High SideThe last month can only be described as a maturing experience for 17-year-old Cap Henry. In less than a month’s time, Team Cap Henry Racing (CHR) has experienced the highs and the lows of the sprint car world.

On April 25th, team CHR would return to Attica Raceway Park and almost garner their second win in the past two weeks. The #04 car would start on the pole of the feature event and proceed to lead 23 of the 25 lap main event before being relegated to third on the final two circuits. This would keep the Kear’s Speed Shop backed 305 in the points lead in the 305 division at Attica Raceway Park. The next two weeks of racing at Attica Raceway Park would succumb to Mother Nature as all the competitors were rained out.

The next event was at Fremont Raceway Park which has not been good to Team CHR this year. Being the 305 Rookie-of-the-Year in 2007, the team had High Hopes for this season at Fremont. Though it has not come to fruition to date, the Ramshackle Supply backed car began the season by transferring directly from their heat into the A-main only to have a fatigued front axle break on the rough track surface ending there night in the 23rd position.

The team would return the next week and with a good pill draw would be starting at the front of the field. Working through turn three and four while chasing down the leader, Cap would have the right rear axle snap, sending the G Force Sprinter in to a very hard set of flips that would the end the night for the youngster. Though relatively unhurt, a damaged ego and a destroyed race car would be the outcome.

Not to be discouraged the team rebounded the night of May 16th by putting the teams 360 sprinter in to yet another show against the 410 sprint cars at Attica Raceway Park. Proving that it was not a fluke earlier in the year, Cap used his natural skills and talent to make the show again against the much powerful cars. The Bellevue, Ohio resident would start 12th and come home a very respectable 14th.

The team then decided to go back to Fremont on May 17th taking the Embroidery Unlimited 360 car to run with the 410 cars one more time. Again the young driver used his head as well as his skills and qualified 26th out of 38 cars on what could only be described as a very rough and challenging race track. The Henry Motor Sports (HMS) backed car out qualified the likes of talented veteran drivers Troy Vaccaro, Phil Gressman, Brock Mayes and Craig Mintz.

Cap's Heat race was not going to be an easy one with several front runners and and championship contenders to deal with but Cap was not going to be intimidated by this all star line up. Henry started the heat wisely and quickly found out what the rough surface was going to bring. Initially he dropped to the back half of the field and then began to make his way forward; with a lap to go he was battling with Byron Reed and Mike Linder for the final transfer position.

As the cars entered turns one and two on the final lap an opening came and showing the skills of a crafty veteran the 17-year-old split the two cars in what looked like the move to make the A-main, unfortunately the 312 car of Linder shot across the track collecting Cap's car as he came down the track.  Crew Chief Keith Whaley and the team reviewed the situation, and though everything was available to repair the car the team decided due to the rough conditions and safety, they would park the car for the remainder of the night.

“All I want to do is race,” stated Cap after the race “Though the last couple weeks have been costly, it isn't worth taking the chance of wrecking this car when we just finished repairing from the violent flip last week”.

The team returns to action at Attica Raceway Park on May 23rd for the 305 Engine Builders Challenge.

Team CHR is beginning to assemble the midget car for the Rumble Series this winter and the Chili Bowl. This car is completely open for sponsorship and has the great potential to get TV air time at the Chili Bowl.
