Cap Henry gets 1st 305 Sprint Car Heat Race Win
8 October 2005
15 year old Cap Henry gets his first heat race win during the Sandusky Speedway avalcade weekend. The race is the final event of the year for many of the classes at Sandusky Speedway, and the second largest race weekend each year. 27 cars showed up for the 305 Sprint Division with many of the local racers from dirt also on hand to try and take the prize money.
Cap qualified 19 out of the 27 cars that were separated by less than 2 seconds from the fastest to the slowest. His qualifying time was a full second faster than his first race weekend 2 weeks earlier. His qualifying time put him in the 4th starting position in heat number one of the 4 heats. On the first start he jumped right into second position , and was holding his own when the first place car blew it's rear end in turn 3 oiling the track and sending Cap toward the wall off of turn 4. He gathered the car up
and was able to get the car under control. The track was then closed for oil clean up. The heat race was started all over again, with Cap being moved into the number 3 starting position on the inside. He jumped immediately in to the 2nd spot in turn one, and had the lead coming out of turn two. This was all it took and the HMC Ltd. driver began to run away from the field. By the 1/2 way point the Elite Collision car had a 1/2 lap lead over 2nd place. The gap to second closed slightly as Cap found a good rhythm to hold his position. He won the heat race in only his second time in the car.
Sunday's race was not a good one for the high school freshman. The team had high hopes as Cap was starting 3rd again due to the inversion of the top 12 drivers. As the green flag flew the cars stormed into turn one with Cap and the first place car being slightly loose due to the low line and the cold tires. As the cars headed in to turn 2 the car outside dove down across Cap's car with little to no room available for this move. Cap's car was hit hard by this car immediately breaking his steering and his brake line. The car shot off the side of turn two into the tire wall launching the car into the air and over the first tire wall. The car proceeded to land on the second tire wall almost out of the race track grounds.
This was the end of the day for the young man as the car had extensive front end damage. The team has decided to call it a year and begin prepping for the 2006 season. Cap can be seen in the next couple weeks at Fremont Raceway Park October 9th and 23rd running go-karts for the last couple times this year. |
